The Nguyễn Dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of Vietnam. It ruled the country from 1802 to 1945. The first emperor, Gia Long, unified Vietnam after many years of conflict and chose Huế as the capital. During the Nguyễn Dynasty, many important buildings, temples, and palaces were constructed, including the Imperial City of Huế, which is now a famous historical site. The dynasty also made important contributions to Vietnamese culture, education, and architecture. However, in the late nineteenth century, Vietnam came under French colonial rule, which greatly reduced the power of the Nguyễn emperors. In 1945, Emperor Bảo Đại abdicated, marking the end of the Nguyễn Dynasty. Today, the history and cultural heritage of the Nguyễn Dynasty remain an important part of Vietnam’s national identity.
